Washington State Edged By Iowa
Feb. 5, 2005
LINCOLN, Neb. - For the first time this season the No. 68 Washington State women's tennis team captured the doubles point, but that and two upsets of ranked opponents, proved not enough as the No. 44 Iowa Hawkeyes prevailed 4-3, Saturday.
In doubles play, Ekaterina Burduli/Nora Gaal took charge of the No. 1 position by upsetting the No. 55 tandem of Meg Racette/Hillary Mintz by a score of 8-3. At No. 2 doubles, Chris Martinez/Amy Toth enjoyed similar success and put down Anastasia Zhukova/Milica Veselinovic, 8-4. The Hawkeye duo of Hilary Tyler/Morgan Tuttle was too much for Cougars Orsolya Sallai/Aleksandra Stefanova, the Iowa pair won 8-1.
In singles play, Ekaterina continued her domination in dual matches. Burduli posted her fifth straight victory by upsetting No. 103 Racette, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 in the No. 1 postion. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Toth was the only other player to come out victorious in singles competition. Toth is also undefeated since dual match play began, she's notched six straight victories and has recorded 11 wins overall this season. Toth put down Tyler, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2, in the No. 5 slot.
Washington State will complete it's road trip tomorrow, Feb. 6 by facing the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Match time is set for 8 a.m. CST/6 a.m. PST.
