Cougars Fall to Utah, 5-2

Salt Lake City, Utah - The No. 44 (ITA) Washington State University women's tennis team traveled to Salt Lake City to take on the No. 50 (ITA) University of Utah Thursday, but ended up falling to the Utes, 5-2.
Utah jumped out to the early lead as they won two of three doubles matches, clinching the opening point.
Teammates Ioana Oprea and Elisabeth Fournier picked up the lone doubles win for the Cougars, upending Evgenia Kryuchkova and Leigh Walsh, 8-6, at No. 2. Jessica Gomez and Marina Nicolas went head-to-head with Erin Monson and Karine Bourdages at No. 3 doubles, but ended up falling 8-5.
In singles action, the Cougars were only able to pick up two victories. At No. 2, Oprea found herself down early after losing the first set, but battled back to earn a three set victory over Kryuchkova, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. At No. 4, Nicolas earned a straight set victory over Lisa Johnson, 6-4, 6-1, earning her eighth victory of the season.
At No. 3, senior Aleksandra Cekic played to a third set against her opponent Monson, before falling, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Cougars return to action Friday, Jan. 23, when they take on BYU at Provo, Utah.
