Cougar Tennis Blanks Two In-State Rivals

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University women's tennis opened its 2007 season with two 7-0 victories over visiting Gonzaga University and Eastern Washington University, Saturday afternoon at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
The Cougars (2-0 Overall, 0-0 Pac-10) came out strong in the first match against Gonzaga (0-1 Overall, 0-0 WAC) by sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 1, Ekaterina Burduli and Marjolein van de Ven posted an 8-0 win over Emily Anderson and Kendall Bates while Bianca Selaru and Aleksandra Stefanova clinched the doubles point with an 8-1 win at No. 3 over Kimberly Aigner and Carrie Schofield. Amy Toth and Ashley Spicer made it a clean sweep with an 8-5 win over Sydney Lederhouse and Aglaya Kokurina at No. 2.
In singles play, the Cougars posted straight-set wins in all six matches. Selaru was first off after a 6-0, 6-2 win over Schofield at No. 4 followed by van de Ven's 6-0, 6-1 victory over Bates at No. 3. Burduli, ranked 85th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, clinched the team victory by posting a 6-1, 6-3 win over Anderson at No. 1. Toth then recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Lederhouse, Spicer had a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Aigner and Stefanova closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5 over Kokurina.
The Cougars saw much of the same in the second match as they swept all six single positions with straight-sets against Eastern Washington (0-1 Overall, 0-0 Big Sky). Burduli, last year's team leader in wins, defeated Kasey Knox of EWU in the No. 1 slot, 6-4, 6-2. Burduli is now 2-0 in dual matches and has an overall record of 12-3. Toth kept her winning ways going with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Eastern's Lliana Petrova at No. 2. Stefanova, Selaru, and van de Ven each earned their second wins of the day against their opponents in their respective slots. Aleksandra Cekic earned her first victory of the dual match season and clinched the sweep for WSU with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marie Demerath.
Earlier in the match, the Cougars earned the doubles point with the help of Cougar tandem, Burduli and van de Ven who defeated Eastern's pair of Petrova and Amanda Mankovits, 8-2. Selaru and Stefanova clinched the doubles point for WSU, after their 8-4 defeat against Rachel Berger and Demerath, 8-4.
The Cougars return to action on the road against two Mountain West Conference Opponents. WSU faces Utah Thursday, Jan. 25, and BYU Friday, Jan. 26, both matches are scheduled at 11 a.m.
