Cougars Complete 7-0 Sweep Over Idaho

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State improved to 2-0 after sweeping Idaho 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. Earlier in the day, WSU opened its season with a 5-2 win over Portland State.
In doubles play against Idaho, WSU's No. 2 duo of Liudmila Vasilieva and Lize Leenknecht finished first, falling to the pairing of Constance Alexander and Rita Bermudez 8-5. At No. 1 doubles, Andjela Kankaras and Ksenia Googe evened it at one match each by defeating Victoria Lozano and Almudena Sanz 8-5. WSU's Charlotte Koning and Elizaveta Luzina clinched the doubles point at No 3 after defeating Beatriz Flores and Alejandra Lozano 8-4.
In singles play, Luzina dominated for the Cougars, giving WSU a 2-0 lead after defeating Bermudez 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Kankaras increased the Cougar lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sanz at No. 2 singles. Googe won at No. 3 in straight sets to clinch a Cougar victory after defeating Alexander 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 6 singles, Koning was leading 3-0 over A. Lozano when Lozano was forced to retire. At No. 1 singles, Vasilieva defeated V. Lozano and closed out the match by winning the final four games in a 6-3, 7-5 victory. Olga Musilovich concluded play for the Cougars, defeating Bermudez 6-2, 6-2 to give the Cougars a 7-0 sweep over the Vandals.
The Cougars continue their three-match home stand Sunday against No. 61 Wyoming at 9 a.m. at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
