Cougars Optimistic After First Day of Pac-10 Indoor Championships

PULLMAN, Wash. - Junior Nora Gaal and Freshman Nelly Dvornicka both posted wins, Friday, in the first round of the Pac-10 Indoor Championships in Seattle. Dvornicka played near perfect in her first-round defeat of Washington's Megan Flynn, 6-1, 6-0. She will face Oregon's Ester Bak in the quarterfinals. In the first round Gaal knocked off Oregon's Jaime Marshall, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1. In the quarterfinals she fell to Laura Gordon of UCLA 6-3, 6-4. "I am impressed with the overall competitiveness our team has," said Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart. "We are doing a lot of things very well." Freshman Amy Toth fell in the first round to Washington's Dinka Hadzic, 6-3, 6-2. University of Washington's Erin Hoe defeated Cougar senior Lorena Arias, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round. Oregon's Dominika Dieskova earned a first round win against junior Orsolya Sallai 6-1, 6-0. Junior Chris Martinez was overcome in the first round by Feriel Essigher of UCLA, 7-5, 7-5. Cougar Zsofi Fodor fell to Nina Yaftali of USC after taking the first set, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. Washington's Stephanie Svanfeldt defeated senior Zorana Roganovic, 6-3, 7-6. Cougar freshman Nelly Dvornicka played near perfect in her defeat of Washington's Megan Flynn, 6-1, 6-0. Doubles matches continue through the night, results will be posted Saturday. The tournament continues Saturday with the consolation round beginning at 9 a.m.
