Cougars Face Lumberjacks, Sun Devils In Arizona This Weekend

Nov. 4, 2009

This Week: The Washington State University swim team will travel south to Arizona and face Northern Arizona Friday Nov. 6, in Flagstaff, Ariz., with events beginning at 2 p.m...less than 24 hours later the Cougars will be in the pool again to face Arizona State Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. at 11 a.m...UNLV will also partake in the meet Saturday, but WSU will not compete against the Rebels.

WSU This Season: After starting the season with a loss to Boise State, the Cougars rebounded quickly with a win against Idaho at the Debbie Pipher Memorial...senior Michaela Ahlin was named MVP of the meet after winning three individual events and setting two meet records.

Last Meeting with NAU: The Cougars defeated the Lumberjacks last season in Pullman by a score of 146-59, sweeping NAU in every event.

Last Meeting with ASU: WSU's last trip to Tempe, Ariz., was during the 2007 season at a dual meet against the Sun Devils...Cougars had four individual wins but lost 172.5-115.5.

Head Coach Erica Quam on NAU: "NAU is a much improved team with a lot of experience. They have 15 athletes in their junior and senior classes and raced really well at their conference championships last year. They also have several freshmen who will make their lineup that much stronger, including Australian backstroker, Fiona Connell. We will be racing our events in a short-course meters pool at 7,200 feet, something they definitely like to remind us of when we are there. They also will contest and score diving, so we will have to be on our game to try and make up that 32-point difference. Our team has handled these things well in the past and I believe if we can focus on racing instead of times and take it one event at a time, that we will get a great deal out of this competition."

Coach Quam on ASU: "ASU has new leadership under first year head coach, Dorsey Tierney. Dorsey is a talented coach and brings a high standard of expectation and excellence to that program. ASU returns school record-holders Ashton Aubry and Jamie Martinez who are standout swimmers and have added a talented class of six freshmen. We are excited to race in our first Pac-10 competition of the season. The meet format against ASU will have both men's and women's events as well as diving. The meet will go a little slower and our swimmers will get more rest than they are used to between their events, which will set us up well for the following weekend of competition in Minneapolis."
