WSU Swimming Adds Two for Next Season

May 1, 2008

PULLMAN, Wash. - High school seniors Lorraine Zannini and Rachael Krager each signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Washington State swim team next season announced WSU Head Coach Erica Quam, Thursday.

Krager is a freestyle and butterfly swimmer from Valencia, Calif. During her junior year, Krager set the 200 freestyle, 200 IM and 500 freestyle school records at William S. Hart High School. She also was a member of the record-setting 400 freestyle relay. She was a CIF qualifier all four years and placed in three events at both the CIF Masters meet and the CIF Division II meet her junior season.

As a senior, Krager bettered her own 200 free school record and was a member of the 200 medley relay that broke the school record.

As well as swimming for her high school, Krager competed for the Rose Bowl Aquatics Club. She was a spring national qualifier as well as a summer nationals and junior nationals relay qualifier.

Zannini is a native of Flagstaff, Ariz., and specializes in the breaststroke events. Zannini is a three-time state champion including back-to-back victories in the 100 breaststroke her junior and senior seasons and a win in the 200 IM her senior year. She helped her team to an eighth-place finish her junior year and a runner-up showing this past season. Following her junior year, Zannini was named the Arizona Daily Sun Girls Swimmer of the Year.

Zannini was a two-sport athlete in high school, also competing three seasons on the track team as a hurdler. Outside of high school, Zannini competed for the Flagstaff Snow Sharks where she placed third in the 50 breast at the Senior Short Course State Championships in 2007 and second in the 100 breast at the same competition in 2008.

Academically, Zannini excelled. She was a member of the National Honor Society and a scholar-athlete all four years; she also was a member of the Grand Canyon Youth Corps.

"We are excited to add both Rachael Krager and Lorraine Zannini to our incoming class this fall," said Quam. "Both have enjoyed remarkable improvements in the last two years of swimming. Rachael will bring versatility to our lineup as she is strong in distance free, IM, and the 200 butterfly. Lorraine will add depth to our corps of breaststrokers. Both Rachael and Lorraine made immediate connections with the personalities on our team and will be great additions to our program."

Krager and Zannini will be joining the four who signed with the Cougars last fall (Emma Neely, Danielle Palumbo, Jessie Craig and Melissa Bogert) to bring six new athletes to Gibb Pool in 2008-09.
