Eight Cougar Swimmers Garner Pac-10 Academic Honors
April 16, 2003 PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Jill Olson and juniors Theresa Dunn and Sasha Taylor earned Pacific-10 Conference First Team All-Academic honors, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Wednesday. The three WSU swimmers to receive first team honors marks the most to receive the honor in WSU swimming history. Olson, a native of Seattle, complied a grade-point average of 3.68 while majoring in accounting. She recorded an 18th-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle at the Pac-10 Championships this season, an event in which she holds second place on WSU's all-time list. Olson also holds the school record in the 1,000 freestyle and sixth all-time in the 500 freestyle. This marks the third consecutive year she has been named to the Pac-10 first team. Olson is the only WSU swimmer to receive the honors three consecutive years. Dunn has carried a 3.84 GPA and is pursuing a major in business administration and finance. The native of Morgan Hill, Calif., placed 27th in the 100 backstroke and 29th in the 200 backstroke at the 2003 Pac-10 Championships. This is the second straight year Dunn as been named to the Pac-10 first team. Sophomore Lisa Irwin garnered All-Academic Second Team honors. Irwin, a team co-captain this season, maintains a GPA of 3.73 and is yet to declare her major. This is the first year Irwin has been awarded a Pac-10 academic honor. Other Cougar honorees include seniors Becca Cohen (Portland, Ore.), Sara Schmied (Woodinville) and Lindsay Henahan (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior Nicole Chinn (Seattle), who all earned honorable mentions. To be eligible for the Pac-10 All-Academic team athletes must have a class standing of sophomore or older, have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and be either a starter or significant substitute.
