WSU Swimming Earns Academic Honors

PULLMAN, Wash. - Seven Washington State swimmers were named to the 2006 Pacific-10 Conference Women's Swimming All-Academic first team, conference Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Wednesday. Five Cougars earned second team honors with four more placed on the honorable mention list.

Seniors Andrea Lubeck (3.98 GPA, zoology) and Karen Eldred (3.93 GPA, Spanish education) topped the first team list, with Lubeck earning the accolade for the third consecutive year and Eldred getting her second consecutive first team award.

Juniors Lindsay Backhouse (3.87 GPA, human nutrition & food), Erin McCleave (3.74 GPA, biology) and Katie Van Horne (3.82 GPA, medical sciences) were also selected to the All-Academic first team with Backhouse garnering the award for the second consecutive season. McCleave was named to the second team last season while Van Horne was an honorable mention selection.

Sophomores Bryn Mooney (3.92 GPA, undeclared) and Sarah Reichwald (3.89 GPA, international studies) round out the WSU first team honorees, each earning the recognition in their first year of eligibility.

Five Cougars were named to Pac-10 All-Academic second team led by senior Jane Copland (3.59 GPA, English) who earned honorable mention honors in the two previous seasons. Juniors Kayli Changstrom (3.64 GPA, sport management) and Beth Newhouse (3.59 GPA, neuroscience) were also recognized with Changstrom named to second team for the second consecutive year. Sophomores Larissa Barth (3.80 GPA, undeclared) and Danielle Berish (3.83 GPA, undeclared) garnered the accolade for the first time.

Emily Chandler (Jr., 3.32 GPA, communication), Laurie Gregg (Jr., 3.34 GPA, communication) Kelly O'Neill (So., 3.06 GPA, social studies) and Monika Povilonyte (Jr., 3.21 GPA, movement studies) capped off WSU's Pac-10 All-Academic honorees, earning honorable mention recognition for their classroom efforts.

The Cougars were also recognized for their team academic performance by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, tying for fifth in the nation in team grade point average (3.46) among Division I schools and ranking highest in the Pac-10.
