Feb. 25, 2012

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Washington State swim team had four student-athletes represent the Cougars in the finals at the Pac-12 Women's Swimming Championship, Friday.

Washington State junior Shelbi Luchini advanced to the "C" final in the 400 IM, where she placed 21st overall with a time of 4:21.18. That time was fast enough to earn her the number two spot on the Washington State all-time list.

Other Cougars who competed in "C" finals were sophomore Emma Johansson, who finished 22nd in the 100 fly with a time of 54.55 (fourth on the Washington State all-time list), freshman Alison Mand, who took 24th in the 100 fly clocking a 55.34 (seventh best on the Cougar all-time list), and senior Jessie Craig, who claimed 22nd in the 100 breast in 1:03.85.

As a team, Washington State maintained its ninth place standing through day three of the Pac-12 Women's Swimming Championship, with 187.5 points.

With one day of competition left California currently has the lead with 961.5 points, followed by Stanford tallying 868 points and USC holding their third place standing with 819 points.

"We had another great day," commented Cougar head coach Tom Jager. "Our goal was to swim faster than we did in December, and we are doing that."

Other Washington State stand-out performances came from senior Danielle Palumbo who claimed fourth on the Cougar all-time list in the 100 back, touching the wall in 56.09; junior Kelsey Bruggman who now ranks 10th on the Washington State all-time list in the 100 fly by clocking a 55.90, and sophomore Kelly Tannhauser who is now sixth on the Cougar all-time list in the 400 IM with a time of 4:27.10.

The final day of the conference championships takes place Saturday, Feb. 25, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m., and finals to follow at 6 p.m.
