Feb. 23, 2012

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Washington State junior Shelbi Luchini represented the Cougar swim team in the 200 IM "C" final during the Pac-12 Women's Swimming Championship, Thursday.

Luchini's preliminary time of 2:02.10 was good enough to earn her the number two spot on the Washington State all-time list. She improved on her time during the "C" final, touching the wall in 2:01.84 to finish the day in a tie for 22nd.

"Shelbi is that type of leader for our team," stated Cougar head coach Tom Jager. "She has worked really hard and put us in a good spot for tomorrow."

With a time of 23.34, Cougar senior Jessie Craig claimed third place on the Washington State all-time list with her performance in the 50 free.

Other stand-out performances came from sophomore Kelly Tannhauser, who clocked a 2:04.49 in the 200 IM, and sophomore Emma Johansson, who finished the 50 free in 23.50, both placing eighth on the Cougar all-time list for their respective events.

As a team, the Cougars maintained their ninth place standing through day two of the Pac-12 Women's Swimming Championship, with 134.5 points.

Stanford currently leads the pack with 462 points, followed by California tallying 426.5 points and USC rounding out the top-three with 390 points.

The Washington State "A" 200 free relay team of Craig, junior Evelina Bieleckaite, Johansson and senior Melissa Bogert placed seventh with a time of 1:32.30, bringing in 46 points for the Cougars.

"Both of our relay teams were off the charts," added Jager. "Our 'A' team swam a great race, but our 'B' team was also impressive. They made the 'A' team really step up. It was a good competition for us."

Day three of the conference championships continues Friday, Feb. 24, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m., and finals to follow at 6 p.m.
