AUBURN, Ala. - Washington State junior Monika Povilonyte earned a NCAA cut to lead the Cougars in the first day of competition at the 2005 U.S. Open. The long course meet continues through Sunday, Dec. 3.

Povilonyte posted a time of 1:13.21 in the "B" final of the 100 breaststroke, placing 15th overall and earning a NCAA "B" cut in the event.

Jane Copland, Erin McCleave and Afton Pickett also returned for Thursday's second session earning spots in the "C" finals of their respective events. Copland competed in the 200 individual medley (2:23.36) finishing 23rd overall, McCleave finished 24th in the 400 freestyle (4:27.58) and Pickett placed 22nd in the 200 backstroke (2:22.34).

Other Cougars making appearances in individual events included Kayli Changstrom in the 200 individual medley and Elyse Peterson in the 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle.

Washington State wrapped up the first day of the meet with a sixth place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. Changstrom, Lina Daugvilaite, McCleave and Danielle Berish combined for a time of 8:36.16 in the event.

Competition continues Friday, Dec.2 with Cougars racing in the 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley and 400 freestyle relay.
