Cougar Swimming Races Past Seattle U

PULLMAN, Wash. -Washington State swimming opened its 2012-13 season with a commanding win over cross state rival Seattle U. Junior Kelly Tannhauser and multiple Cougar relays had some of the strongest finishes of the meet. The Cougars claimed the victory with 179 points and Seattle U finished the night with 83.

The Cougars came out to a roaring start with all three WSU teams finishing ahead of Seattle U in the 200 medley relay. The WSU `A' relay comprised of junior Emma Johansson, freshman Presley Wetterstrom, sophomore Alison Mand, and senior Jenna Bekker touched the wall first in a time of 1:47.69. Juniors Kelly Tannhauser and Taylor Indahl and seniors Kelsey Bruggman and Evelina Bieleckaite finished nearly a second behind with a time of 1:48.57. Coming in third at 1:49.37 was the WSU `C' Relay comprised of freshmen Loree Olson, Kiana Sullenberger, Shanell Sullenberger, and junior Anne Kenney.

WSU had four of the top five scorers of the meet with Kelly Tannhauser claiming the top spot earning 27 points toward the Cougar victory. Tannhauser out-touched all of her opponents in the 200 free, 200 back, and 400 IM winning the IM by over eight seconds.

The final event of the night sealed the win for the Cougars who finished one-two in the 200 free relay. The WSU `A' relay of seniors Bieleckaite, Bekker, Kenney and Johansson claimed first place with a time of 1:35.41, almost a second away from the Gibb Pool record. Mand, Kiana Sullenberger, Bruggman, and sophomore Nicole Proulx touched the wall just behind their teammates with a time of 1:37.95

"Our relays were really good tonight," WSU Assistant Coach Adriana Quirke said, "We finished our races really strong, I thought we were a lot tougher than last year."

Next the Cougars hit the road Oct. 26 and Oct. 27 to face Arizona and Arizona State in weekend of dual meets.
