Copland Concludes Season at U.S. Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Washington State University freshman swimmer Jane Copland finished up at the U.S. National Championships, Friday, swimming the 100 meter (LC) breaststroke.

Copland swam a preliminary time of 1:14.78. She went on to improve her time by time trialing in 1:14.60. Her personal best in the event is 1:14.50.

Copland time trialed for the 200 LC IM Thursday, swimming a personal best time of 2:23.27. She won her heat in that event.

"We're pleased Jane decided to go to U.S. Nationals, step up her training and continue her season," WSU Head Coach Erica Quam said. "She was able to show what she's capable of."

The freshman finished 21st in the finals of the 200 meter (LC) breaststroke Wednesday, swimming a time of 2:36.95. Her time came close to her personal best of 2:36.38, which she swam at the Pan Pacific Championships in August.

"We're really happy with how she was able to step," Quam said. "We're excited with how she's raced so far."

Copland, a freshman from Wellington, New Zealand, earned an automatic qualification for the 200 breaststroke with a seventh place finish of 2:15.71 (SC) at the Pacific-10 Championships (March 1). The qualifying standard for the U.S. Nationals is 2:18.29 (SC).
