Henahan Shatters Own School Record
Feb. 28, 2003
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Washington State University women's swim team remains in ninth place after the second day of the Pacific-10 Conference Championships at the King County Aquatics Center.
Senior co-captain Lindsay Henahan finished fifth in the 100 butterfly in a time of 54.05, marking the highest finish for the Cougars in this season's Pac-10 Championships. Henahan's time of 53.75 in the preliminaries set a new school record for the Cougs. Her life-time best also gave her an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championships, getting under the qualifying standard of 54.14. Henahan, a native of Rochester, N.Y., held the previous WSU record of 54.37.
"It was an exciting swim," WSU Head Coach Erica Quam said. "She attacked the race from the very beginning. I'm proud of her."
Henahan also swam the fastest butterfly split of the meet in the 200 medley relay with a time of 23.70 in her 50 yards.
Senior Becca Cohen made the finals in the 200 freestyle, finishing 19th with a time of 1:50.99. Also making the finals for the Cougars was junior Sasha Taylor. Taylor finished the 100 backstroke in a time of 58.25, earning her 24th.
"Everyone swam a lot better today than yesterday," Quam said. "I just want us to continue to improve each time we swim."
Saturday at the Pac-10's, freshman Jane Copland looks to earn herself an NCAA qualifying time in the 200 breaststroke. Copland currently is 30th in the nation in that events. Approximately the top 31 times in the nation make the NCAA Championships.
The Pac-10 competition will conclude Saturday at the King County Aquatics Center. Preliminary heats for individual events will be held at 11 a.m., with finals for all events beginning at 6 p.m.
