Feb. 22, 2012

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Washington State swim team competed in its first two events at the Pac-12 Women's Swimming Championship, Wednesday.

After swimming the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay, the Cougars sit in ninth place with 86 points. Washington State is trailing its closest competitor, Utah, by only two points.

The current leader board has California in first place with 128 points, followed by Stanford with 112 points. Arizona, Arizona State and USC are in a three-way tie for third with 104 points apiece.

The night started off with the 200 medley relay where the Cougar team comprised of sophomore Emma Johansson, senior Jessie Craig, senior Melissa Bogert and senior Evelina Bieleckaite each swam lifetime best split times to finish in 1:41.70, earning the Cougars 42 points.

In the 800 free relay, freshman Nicole Proulx, senior Emma Neely, freshman Haley Anderson and sophomore Kelly Tannhauser posted a time of 7:29.47 to bring the Washington State point total to 86.

"We swam a couple of great relays," Cougar head coach Tom Jager said. "Everyone is swimming well. We had standout performances tonight by Melissa with her fly leg of the relay, and our freshman, Nicole and Haley, who really stepped up tonight."

Jager added, "We just need to stay inside ourselves and we'll swim great. Whether or not the score reflects it, we had a great day."

The Washington State swim team resumes competition for day two of the conference championship Thursday, Feb. 23, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m., and finals to follow at 6 p.m.
