Cougars Win Third Consecutive Dual Meet

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Washington State swimming hit the road after a big win over local rival the Idaho Vandals last week. The Cougars continued their winning streak defeating CSU Bakersfield, 172-116.

The Cougars claimed the top spot in 10 of the 14 swimming events, including eight individual events. Junior Emma Johansson and freshman Loree Olson each claimed two individual victories. Johansson took first in the 100 back (57.63) and 100 fly (56.98). Olson touched the wall before everyone else in the 200 back (2:04.04) and 200 I.M. (2:08.42).

Other Cougar highlights came from Nicole Proulx winning the 100 free with a time of 51.91. Freshman Frederikke Hall claimed her first victory as a Cougar in the 100 breast (1:06.34). Presley Wetterstrom had a repeat of last week winning the 200 breast clocking a time of 2:20.77. Senior Shelbi Luchini was also among the Cougar triumphs finishing first in the 200 fly (2:06.88).

WSU also fielded some strong relays winning both the 400 free and 200 medley relays. The winning combination of Proulx, Evelina Bieleckaite, Jenna Bekker, and Johansson took first in the 400 free relay (3:32.30). The successful 200 medley relay was comprised of Johansson, Shanell Sullenberger, Alison Mand, and Bieleckaite finishing with a speedy time of 1:46.65.

The Cougars return to Gibb Pool next week for their dual meet of the year. Washington State will host Utah, Friday Feb 15, 2013 at 5 p.m.
