Two first place finishes for Washington State freshman Erin McCleave were not enough for the Cougars as the women's swim team dropped a dual meet to the Beavers of Oregon State, 155-103, Friday.
WSU was led by McCleave, who had two of the Cougars' three victories in 14 events. The Rutherglen, Australia native captured first in the 200 and 100 freestyles (1:53.05, 52.78). She also finished second in the 50 freestyle (24.50).
Oregon State broke three records on the night. Senior Birte Steven set records in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes. Steven's times of 1:02.56 in the 100 and 2:14.38 in the 200 bettered records set by WSU's Erin Eldridge in 2000. Ausra Pacebutaite set the record in the 100 backstroke. Her time of 56.94 broke the 10-year-old record of 57.64.
Sophomore Jane Copland grabbed the other first place finish for the Cougars in the 200 individual medley.
Freshman Kayli Changstrom had two second place finishes for Washington State (100 butterfly and 200 individual medley). Fellow freshman, Monika Povilonyte added second place finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Lindsay Backhouse (freshman) had the top finish in the 200 backstroke for WSU, finishing second in a time of 2:08.09.
Washington State will honor its three seniors in another dual meet against Oregon State, Saturday, Jan. 31. The meet is the final Pac-10 home meet for the Cougars this season. Action begins at 11 a.m. at Gibb Pool.
The Cougars host one more home meet on the season, next weekend, as Simon Fraser and Central Washington come to town, Friday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m.
