Student-Athlete Spotlight

Name: Melanie Johnston

Hometown: Mesa, Ariz.

Nickname: Mel

Major: Undecided

Favorite thing about WSU: A few of my favorite things at WSU are how friendly everyone is; staff, students, athletic students, and community. The staff is very helpful in answering any questions you may have about anything possible and gets back to you in a timely manner. For the students here at WSU they are very open to conversations about you. They also seem to enjoy being surrounded by a vast majority of cultures, places, and physical appearances. The student-athletes all are hard working and want to make the program here succeed in the best way possible and learn from other people's mistakes in the past to improve. Being a Pac-10 school we have high expectations and want to be noticed in what we accomplish on and off the field. On the other hand, the community in Pullman is very supportive in athletics and noticing that you're a student that is representing the town. From my hometown we really don't have the community supporting the student athletes' and them wanting to participate in what we are trying to accomplish. With all the positivity it's nice to be supported from people who aren't apart of the program.

Heroes: When it comes to heroes I can't pinpoint the exact people besides my parents. In general I would have to say my parents, family, and coaches are my heroes. They all have pushed me to become a better person and prepared me to become a better student-athlete.

Best Career Soccer Moment: The best soccer moment I would say I will remember for the rest of my life would have to be my junior year playing for Les Armstrong at the Surf Cup in California. With my favorite team I have played for ('90 Sereno Girls), we went through the hardest bracket you could ever see. With two California teams, a Colorado team and I believe a New Mexico team we had to overcome them all to get to the final. With only 14 players, we were able to play the '90 Surf Team in the final. Even though our bodies were completely dead by the last game, we weren't going home with another year of losing the tournament. The first half we played the most amazing soccer I have ever seen and have been a part of. With over 200 people watching this intense game I played the best soccer I have ever played. We ended up 2-0 in the first half. Starting the second half the game kept going back and forth. They had a few dangerous opportunities but weren't capable of scoring. With 20 minutes left they got a PK and made that shot making the game 2-1. After that we became hectic but soon found our feet and kept the game calm. With 15 minutes left they scored another goal outside the 18. With 10 minutes left we ended up scoring a phenomenal combination goal winning the game 3-2. For the past six years of playing club it was always a big game when we played against Surf so this was the most amazing feeling that we finally had beaten them. Once the referee blew his whistle it was the first time I had ever cried with excitement after a game. The hard work we put in before this tournament was the worst and most intense training I have ever gone through. For how fit I was at the tournament it was definitely worth it. That feeling of excitement was worth training hard for two months prior to this amazing win.

Most Embarrassing Moment: The most embarrassing moment in my life would have to be my spleen injury in Hawaii in 2008. Pretty much I went to one hospital and found out I ruptured my spleen in two separate areas. From one hospital to the next I was rushed by the paramedics to The Queen Medical Center. Without my parents I had the company of a team mom and her oldest daughter. I'm not going to go into detail as to what went down in the room while the doctors were preparing me for surgery. But the team mom and her daughter let's just say they got to know me very well that day.

Hobbies (other than soccer): In my spare time I find myself doing a lot of activities. With friends I enjoy: going to the movies, playing basketball, dinner, hiking, volleyball, biking, skateboarding, going to the gym, swimming, and bowling. As for myself I enjoy arts and craft, decorating clothing or items, and going to church.

Favorite TV Show: I don't really have a favorite TV show because I don't have time to watch episodes and I can't watch TV for a long period of time. But I enjoy watching George Lopez, That 70's Show, Fresh Prince of Bellaire, America's Best Dance Crew, America's Funniest Home Video and Andy Griffith.

Favorite Band: When it comes to music I don't really have a preference. I enjoy anything but jazz and scream music. Depending on what kind of mood I am in will depend on the genre I listen to.

In Five Years Time...I see myself moving back to Arizona and starting the next chapter of my life. I hope I'm living in my own apartment with my own car and starting to enjoy my job. Also if I do pursue with pre-med I would like to start school and go forth with my degree. Other than that I hope to keep in touch with my high school friends, and go out on the weekends and enjoy my time without kids.
