CAPTAIN'S DIARY: PORTLAND AND WAHSINGTON

October 9, 2006

After coming off a bye week, the team was re-energized for a tough weekend of competition. We traveled to the familiar venue of the University of Portland and, upon leaving, we received a surprising guest appearance from the one and only Head Cougar Football Coach Bill Doba. He gave us some words of wisdom and inspirational advice for our match against the reigning National Champions.

The game served to be a battle between both teams and, at halftime, we were down 2-0, however the score did not reflect the play of the game. Five minutes into the half Allison Scurich scored a fantastic header off of Anna Miller's bullet free kick. This was the first goal of Allison's WSU career and it was gorgeous. The game ended 2-1, but we had numerous missed opportunities to tie the game. We left with a loss but learned a lot from the game to take with us as we continue forward into the start of Pac-10 play.

We kicked off the Pac-10 season Sunday with our intrastate rival University of Washington. We had not lost at home against UW since 1996 and were not going to break that streak this year! The game was a hard fought battle and both teams played very physical. The game remained scoreless until the 57th minute when Anna Miller slipped a ball past UW's back line to an on-running Carly Dobratz who placed the ball in the back of the net. We came away with the 1-0 victory and bragging rights for the state of Washington.

This coming weekend we travel to Oregon to play against two more Northwest rivals. We are hoping to come out of this weekend 3-0 in the Pac-10. GO COUGS!!
