SOCCER CAPTAIN'S DIARY: UTAH ROAD TRIP September 6, 2006 In heading off to Utah Thursday morning, our team had high hopes of coming home with two victories. Flying for the first time this year posed some new challenges for both new and old players. One huge inconvenience that affected our team was the no water, food, or any form of liquid rule enforced by airlines. After the surprisingly short but dehydrating flight we arrived in Salt Lake City. Spaghetti Factory was delicious as always and helped us to prepare for the game Friday against the Utah Utes. This year we tried a new method to fight the high altitude. Instead of trying to adjust quickly which didn't serve us well two years ago, we avoided training outside till game time. I guess the coaches do know what they're talking about because it worked. The Utes proved to be an outstanding opponent. They were ranked 24 in the nation and had already beaten Stanford in their opening match. After an evenly fought match Carly Dobratz tied the game up off a header from Anna Miller's corner kick. Sadly with four minuets left in double overtime we lost 2 - 1. Though we were upset about the Utah game we knew we had another quality opponent to prepare for in Utah State. As a result of going into double overtime and multiple injuries within the team, the coaches opted for a pool workout Saturday morning. Come Sunday morning we felt rested and ready for a victory against Utah State. The game was definitely not pretty but we managed to pull out a win with an exceptional goal by Sasha Baines in the first half. Utah left us with split emotions adding one win and one lost to our record. It was a beautiful state but nothing compares to the Palouse and playing at Courgarland for the next two weekends. Hope to see you there!! GO COUGS!!! -Angela Fajardo
