Soccer Captain's Diary: Cougar Home Opener
Sept. 14, 2005
This past weekend Wake Forest made the trip to Pullman where, unfortunately, we did not get the result we were hoping for. As a team we felt prepared in all aspects of our game, had done our pre-game preparations, and were ready to come out and defend "Cougarland". We started the game off very strong, and after almost the entire first half of hard work and determination, we mentally checked out for a second and, as a result, Wake Forest punished us and scored their first goal. We were down 1-0 until Anna Miller had a free kick at the top of the penalty box, and hit it with enough pace and accuracy to sneak past their goal keeper. We ended the half 1-1, and went into our half-time break feeling very confident.
Coach Potter reassured us that we deserved to be where we were, and that the game was basically a 0-0 game and that it was ours for the taking. We knew what we had to do, and we worked out specific details going into the second half hoping we would end with the result we were striving for. Regrettably, as the half continued on, we had many opportunities to pull ahead but we failed to capitalize on our scoring chances. Then due to another simple mistake, Wake Forest put another goal in the net, and the game ended but not the way we planned.
Regardless of the outcome, we held our heads high because we put up a fight and knew that we deserved to win that game as much as Wake Forest. We immediately refocused ourselves and began preparing our minds for our next challenge, which is Virginia Commonwealth and Long Island next weekend. We are looking forward to this opportunity to redeem ourselves and prove that we can get positive results against great teams.
