Canada U-20 World Cup Update
Aug. 27, 2012
SAITAMA, Japan - The Canada U-20 Women's World Cup team was eliminated in the group stage with a 2-1 loss to Korea DPR.
The deciding goal came in the 78th minute when Korea DPR converted a penalty kick. With nine points, Korea DPR advanced to the second stage from Group C. Norway, which finished second with six points, also advanced. Canada (three points) and Argentina (zero points) did not advance.
Washington State sophomore midfielder Nicole Setterlund is a member of the Canadian team and shared some of her thoughts.
"In regard to the Argentina game, that was the most surprising international soccer game I have ever seen/played. Our preparation for the match was relentless, completely covering every aspect of their play so we could maximize our chance of success.
"Before each game everyone on the team is fully aware if they are in the starting lineup or not, so I, as a nonstarting central defender had a different role than other players. I entered the game at halftime and I played well, considering we were leading 5-0 at the time and it's hard to stayed inspired.
"This win put us in great position going into the Norway game a few days later. After only 45 minutes of play time, the next day I went to the fields to do top-up running. If you remember how awful I described the fitness session I ran after our Japan game, then take that and then add the fatigue of a game. The next day I looked like I was a 70-year-old cowboy with the way I was walking and this was only a day before our game against the physical Norwegians. Thankfully, we have a rather large team of physical therapists who rubbed me back into shape. Our team preparation was much the same as it was for our first game.
"The Norway game I can still see in perfect unbiased as I was unable to enter the match. We had two-thirds of the possession and much more goal scoring opportunities. My good friend, and superstar neighbor Jenna Richardson, scored on a breakaway late in the first half and we all went into the lockerroom feeling great.
"The Norwegians then scored two goals in the second half off unbelievable efforts of a few of the players on their team. I could not even tell you what we did wrong as it was just so unlucky."
