Aug. 19, 2009

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Washington State women's soccer team is ranked 22nd-nationally in the 2009 Soccer America preseason poll.

Last week, the Cougars were No. 21 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll. WSU will host Idaho in its season opener, Friday, Aug. 21 at 3 p.m.

The match against the Vandals will kick off the 20th Anniversary Season for the Cougars. Admission is free and fans can meet the team at the National Lentil Festival in downtown Pullman from 7-8 p.m., Friday.

WSU was nationally-ranked for six weeks each of the last two seasons. Last season, the Cougars topped out at No. 21 and were ranked in all four major polls at the same time (Oct. 20-26), a first in the program's history, on their way to a NCAA postseason appearance. Eight teams in the NSCAA and/or Soccer America preseason poll appear on the WSU schedule, including Stanford (No. 2 NSCAA/No. 2 Soccer America), UCLA (No. 5/3), Portland (No. 4/4), Florida State (No 6/7), USC (No. 8/12), Texas (No. 15/Not Ranked), California (Not Ranked/No. 19) and BYU (No. 25/Not Ranked).

The matches against BYU (Sept. 25), Stanford (Oct. 23), California (Oct. 25), USC (Nov. 6) and UCLA (Nov. 8) will take place in Pullman.
