Aug. 16, 2012

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State soccer team will host Eastern Washington at 3 p.m., Friday.

The exhibition match will take place at Lower Soccer Field. The Cougars return nine starters from last season, when they advanced to the NCAA Championship Second Round.

The meeting with the Eagles kicks off a weekend of soccer action in Pullman. Washington State, under first-year head coach Keidane McAlpine, will take on Gonzaga, Sunday at 3 p.m. in the 2012 season opener.

Offensively, the Cougars are led by forwards Brandi Vega and Jocelyn Jeffers. A senior, Vega scored six goals last season, including three game-winners, and added five assists. The Carson City, Nev., native was named All-Pac-12 Conference First Team and NSCAA All-Pacific Region Second Team. Last season, Jeffers scored a team-leading seven goals, three of which were game-winners. She added five assists to tie Vega for the team lead. A native of Peoria, Ariz., Jeffers was honorable mention All-Pac-12 and garnered a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshmen Team.

Defensively, junior defender Rachael Doyle and redshirt-sophomore Gurveen Clair also return. Doyle was named All-Pac-12 Second Team last season. Clair recorded 12 wins (tied for second), a 0.74 goals against average (third), seven shuouts (tied for third) and 97 saves (seventh) in 2011, all of which rank in the Washington State single-season record books.
