Cougar Soccer Garners Preseason National Ranking

Aug. 11, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Coming off a NCAA Tournament appearance, the Washington State University soccer team is ranked in the preseason National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll.

The Cougars are No. 21 and will carry that ranking into their season opener at home against Idaho, Friday, Aug. 21 at 3 p.m. It is the second time in school history WSU is nationally-ranked to begin the season. The Cougars were No. 20 entering the 1995 campaign.

WSU was nationally-ranked for six weeks each of the last two seasons. Last season, the Cougars top out at No. 21 and were ranked in all four major polls at the same time (Oct. 20-26), a first in the program's history.

"The preseason recognition validates that our program is moving forward," WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. "Our job is to maintain our position in the national spotlight."

Seven teams in the NSCAA preseason poll appear on the WSU schedule, including No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 Portland, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 Florida State, No. 8 USC, No. 15 Texas and No. 25 BYU.

The matches against BYU (Sept. 25), Stanford (Oct. 23), USC (Nov. 6) and UCLA (Nov. 8) will take place in Pullman.
