Cougar Soccer Season Ends with Loss to Maryland
Nov. 15, 2009
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Jasmyne Spencer's first half goal lifted Maryland past Washington State 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship at Ludwig Field, Sunday. The goal came in the 33rd minute off a rebound of a shot after No. 19 Maryland (14-5-2) had earned a corner kick. Megan Watson and Molly Dreska each picked up an assist on the goal. Washington State (14-6-2), ranked 14th-nationally, outshot the Terrapins 12-10 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. "It was a battle between two good teams today and the difference was one set piece," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "There are a lot of positives to take from the match. The senior class we are losing has definitely set a high standard for this program as we move forward." WSU's best chances in the second half came on a header from redshirt-junior Mallory Fox in the 56th minute off a corner kick and in the 78th minute when senior Kiersten Dallstream had a shot in the box on the right side after receiving a long through ball. Both times, Maryland goalkeeper Mary Casey was there to make the save and preserve the shutout. WSU NOTES
