LEXINGTON, Ky. - For the second time in three seasons, the Washington State Cougars advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.

After a 1-1 tie through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, Washington State (12-6-4) advanced past Kentucky (13-7-1) with a 4-2 advantage in penalty kicks at the UK Soccer Complex, Saturday.

Freshman Jocelyn Jeffers and senior Jacquelyn Roth each converted their penalty kick to put the Cougars up 2-0 after two rounds. A miss by freshman Nicole Setterlund and a conversion by Stuart Pope of Kentucky sliced the Washington State advantage to 2-1 with two rounds remaining.

Freshman Bethanie Skelton kept the pressure on the Wildcats with a make in round four, but Kentucky stayed alive when Ashley VanLandingham converted. Freshman Mesa Owsley then sealed the victory with a make and the Cougars moved on to face Virginia, a No. 2 seed in the tournament.

"Obviously we're very excited," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "It played out the way we thought it would, a tight affair between two good teams."

With a 14 mph wind at its back, the Wildcats outshot the Cougars 7-3 in the first half. In the 41st minute, Setterlund was called for playing the ball with the hand in the Washington State box. Kelsey Hunyadi converted the subsequent penalty kick for her team-leading 14th goal of the season to give Kentucky a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Washington State took advantage of the wind at its back and dominated play. The Cougars outshot the Wildcats 7-1 and senior Ali Fenter netted the equalizer in the 57th minute when she received a pass in the box from sophomore Rachael Doyle on the left side and beat Kentucky goalkeeper Kayla Price. The goal was the first of the season for Fenter.

The two-overtime periods were fairly even with Kentucky logging six shots to Washington State's four. Each team finished the match with two corner kicks. Redshirt-freshman Gurveen Clair made three saves for the Cougars.

The Cougars are 3-0-4 in overtime matches this season...Washington State won five matches when trailing on the road at halftime or later during the regular season (match against Kentucky is officially a tie)...penalty kicks decided a Washington State match for the first time in school history...Ali Fenter became the 10th Cougar to score a goal this season...Washington State played at Virginia, Sept. 9 (0-0 tie).
