PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State scored early and late to record a 2-0 win over No. 7/11 California in Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer Sunday.

Junior Kim Morgan (Seattle) scored in the fourth minute with a header off a free kick from sophomore Christie Spear (Bend, Ore.) to give the Cougars (8-5-2, 2-1-2 Pac-10) a 1-0 lead.

Much of the first half was a defensive struggle as each team recorded just three shots. The pace was slowed by a combined 24 fouls called in the first half.

In the second half, both teams created scoring opportunities, but neither could convert until junior Shelby Brownfield (Snohomish) beat California (9-6-1, 2-4-0) goal keeper Ashley Sulprizio in the 76th minute to increase the WSU lead to 2-0.

Brownfield, a transfer from Connecticut, was making her first collegiate start.

"Shelby is a very determined person, let alone soccer player," WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias said. "She's been playing well and has been a real good spark off the bench. She looked ready to start and the coaching staff and I felt this would be a good opportunity to give her that first college start."

Junior Sara Leibowitz (Simi Valley, Calif.) faced nine shots, but only needed to make one save in recording her fifth shutout of the season and lower her goals against average to 0.74.

Washington State begins its final road trip of the season, Friday, Nov. 1 with a 7 p.m. game at Arizona State.
