Washington State Victorious Over Beavers and the Elements
Oct. 26, 2012
PULLMAN, Wash. - Nicole Setterlund scored her second goal in as many games, pushing Washington State past conference rival Oregon State 2-1 at Lower Soccer Field, Friday.
The Cougar victory was sealed in the 70th minute by Setterlund when she was in the perfect position to rebound a deflection off an Oregon State defender. The initial shot that set-up the game-winner was taken by Brandi Vega, giving her five assists on the year. After Vega's shot bounced off an OSU defender, Setterlund finished the play by chipping the ball past the Beaver keeper and into the back of the net.
With the victory, Washington State improved its record to 10-6-1 and 4-4-1 within the conference, while Oregon State fell to a mark of 11-5-2 and 3-4-2 in Pac-12 play.
The first scoring action of the match took place in the 20th minute, when the Cougars took the lead thanks to a goal off the foot of Jocelyn Jeffers. Jeffers' fifth goal of the season came by way of a shot from within the box that snuck inside the far post. The try was set up by a cross from Kourtney Guetlein, who has tallied four assists to-date.
With less than five minutes remaining in the opening period, the Beavers' Brittney Oljar tied the match with a shot that flew just above WSU goalkeeper Gurveen Clair's outstretched arms, but just under the crossbar. The equalizer proved to be the only goal the Cougars would concede through the duration of the contest.
"Today I thought we did a good job of keeping them under pressure and pressing the goal," stated Washington State's Head Coach Keidane McAlpine. "We could have been better finishing, but at the end of the day I think the result is the more important piece."
The Cougars dominated the stat sheet recording 19 shots and five corner kicks, while holding OSU to 9 shots and no corner kicks.
Washington State returns to Lower Soccer Field to face Oregon, Sunday, Oct. 28 at noon.
