PULLMAN, Wash. - Marcie Ward's goal in the 29th minute providing the game's only scoring and lifted No. 1 Stanford to a 1-0 win over host Washington State in Pacific-10 women's soccer, Friday.

After Marcia Wallis played the ball up from midfield with a touch pass, Ward scooted past the WSU defense and beat Cougar goalie Sara Leibowitz.

"We had one breakdown in the first half and they capitalized," WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias said. "I thought we played pretty well. That's the No. 1 team in the country and there is a reason for it."

With the win Stanford improved to 14-1-0, 5-0-0 Pac-10. WSU fell to 7-5-2, 1-1-2.

The Cougars were stymied by the Cardinal defense for much of the afternoon and managed just seven shots. Three of those came from reserve Shelby Brownfield.

WSU's defense kept the Cougars in the game throughout as Leibowitz made five saves and defender Shay Hobby cleared a ball off the goal line in the 72nd minute.

Stanford goalie Nicole Barnhart had a relatively easy day and did not make a save in the match. She recorded her sixth straight shutout and her 11th of the season.

"Stanford is very well organized and a strong attacking team," Tobias said. "They have great speed. I think we will come out with some fire Sunday against California."

The Cougars' contest against No. 11 California is Sunday at noon.
