PULLMAN, Wash. - Kelley O'Hara's goal in overtime provided Stanford a 2-1 victory over Washington State in Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer at Lower Soccer Field, Friday.

The loss was a heartbreaker for the 20th-ranked Cougars (10-4-1, 2-1-1 Pac-10) who came within 3:12 of defeating the No. 1 team in the nation for the first time in school history.

The match was played in rain for most of the day and was 0-0 until the 54th minute when WSU forward Elysse Van Leer took a cross from the right off the foot of fellow senior Kiersten Dallstream, settled the ball in the box and scored inside the near post off a deflection by Stanford (16-0-0, 5-0-0 Pac-10) goalkeeper Kira Maker.

It was Maker who kept the match 1-0 when she made a save at point-blank range on a shot by sophomore Ali Fenter in the 58th minute . The Cougars missed a chance in the 82nd minute when Maker was well out of the net and on the ground, but Dallstream's bid to score sailed just wide of the far right post.

Following Dallstream's miss, Cougar junior goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo preserved WSU's advantage with four saves in a little over a minute, including one that she deflected off the crossbar.

Stanford tied the match at 86:48 on a goal by Christen Press. O'Hara sent a cross into the box to Press who settled the ball. Berlingo went low and Press fired high to net the equalizer.

In overtime, Lindsay Taylor sent a cross from the left into the box and O'Hara tallied the game-winner from four yards out.

"I am very proud of our team," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "We played tremendous for 87 minutes, but it is a 90-minute match. Stanford showed why it is the No. 1 team in the nation and we have to find a way to build on the positives in our performance."

The Cougars host No. 23 California, Sunday at 11 a.m.
