Second-Ranked Stanford Slips Past Washington State
Oct. 18, 2012
STANFORD, Calif. - Mariah Nogueira's goal in the 62nd minute lifted No. 2 Stanford to a hard-fought 3-2 victory over visiting Washington State in Pac-12 women's soccer, Thursday night at Cagan Stadium.
The Cardinal (13-1-1, 7-0-0 Pac-12) won its 38th-straight conference match while holding a slim lead in shots (12-10) over Cougars (9-5-1, 3-3-1 Pac-12). Washington State earned five corner kicks to Stanford's two.
"We put together a lot of good stuff tonight, but at the end of the day we gave up three set piece goals and that's not good enough," Cougar Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said. "We showed a lot of resolve to go down two goals on the road and come back."
Zoe Jeffers had a chance to tie the match in the 67th minute after receiving a pass from Rachael Doyle. However, Jeffers's blast from 20 yards out was denied with a one-handed sprawling save by Stanford goalkeeper Emily Oliver.
The Cougars had another opportunity in the 75th minute, but Micaela Castain's free kick from 22 yards out was tipped over the crossbar by Oliver.
After falling behind 2-0, Washington State tied the match before intermission when Castain and Jeffers each found the back of the net.
Castain tallied her team-leading 10th goal of the season at 24:45 when she received a pass in the box from the right off the foot of Bethanie Skelton and finished inside the near post.
At 38:40, Kourtney Guetlein created a chance on the right side when she beat defender 1-on-1 before finding Jeffers in the box for the equalizer.
The Cardinal took a 1-0 lead at 15:38 when Lo'eau LaBonta deflected Courtney Verloo's corner kick past Cougar goalkeeper Ariana Byrd. At 20:59, Stanford increased its lead to 2-0 on a free kick by Chioma Ubogagu that deflected off a Washington State defender.
Washington State will battle No. 18 California in Berkeley, Calif., Sunday at noon.
