Despite Out-Shooting Oregon State 30-9, WSU Ties OSU 1-1 In Overtime

Washington State played 110 minutes with Oregon State only to finish with a 1-1 tie Sunday at Lower Soccer Field. The tie leaves the Cougars 5-8-1 overall, 1-2-1 in Pacific-10 play and the Beavers 5-7-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference action. "I think the result overall was fair," WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. "We had some chances and we dodged some bullets. We didn't lose this weekend so to come away with a win and a tie is not bad going forward to next weekend." The first half of the game would prove to be eventful, but not productive with neither team scoring a goal. The Cougars out-shot Oregon State 11-3 and had four corner kick opportunities compared to OSU's one. But it would be the Beavers breaking into the scorebook in the 73rd minute. Beaver forward Janelle Joy took a shot from outside the right-side of the penalty box. Goalkeeper, Sara Leibowitz who came on in the second half for starter Katie Hultin, bobbled the shot that bounced just behind the goal line to give Oregon State the lead. The Cougars answered less than a minute later when Kim Morgan fired a shot from 33-yards out that bounced off the crossbar. Nicole Wilcox ran onto the ricochet, heading it past Beaver goalkeeper Melissa Onstad to tie the match. Regulation time ended with WSU recording 23 shots and 10 corner kicks. Hultin made two saves in the first half while Leibowitz made one in the second. Oregon had seven shots, three corner kicks and six saves recorded by Onstad.
In the second overtime period Joy almost clinched the victory for OSU when she ran onto a through ball 16-yards out and shot the ball low and to the right. Hultin, who returned for WSU in overtime, came up with a clutch, diving save to keep the Cougars in the game.
Neither team let-up in intensity with WSU taking two shots and Oregon State taking one in the last minute and a half of play but the game would end in a stale-mate. "Ultimately we'd like to win these games at home but the important thing is we didn't lose today and we're still in control of what we want to get out of things," Potter said. "This game is a good platform for us to carry forward for next week's match against Washington." The Cougs return to action Friday, Oct. 24 against cross-state rivals No. 12 Washington at 7 p.m. in Seattle.
