Late Goal Lifts Cougar Soccer Past Arizona
Oct. 18, 2009
TUCSON, Ariz. - Redshirt-junior Mallory Fox converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute and No. 24 Washington State knocked off Arizona 1-0 in Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer, Sunday. The goal by Fox was her first of the season and the eighth of her career. Three of those eight goals have come via a penalty kick. "After all that Arizona has been through in the last week or so and all of the emotions they brought into the match, we are very excited to come out with a win," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "It was about 95 degrees today and we did not possess the ball well, but we showed great character, toughness and resiliency. We found a way to score a goal and I am obviously very proud of our team to come away with two victories on this road trip." Fox's goal gave the Cougars (10-3-1, 2-0-1) their fifth-straight win against the Wildcats (3-11-1, 0-4-0 Pac-10). WSU junior goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo left the match with an injury in the 13th minute. Freshman Ariana Byrd played the final 77 minutes, made three saves, and earned her first-collegiate victory. "Meghan was dinged up and we took her out as a precaution," Potter said. "Ari came in and performed tremendously. Meghan could have gone back in the match, but things were going so well we left them the way they were. The credit goes to Ari for seizing the opportunity presented to her." The Cougars return home to play No. 1 Stanford, Friday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. WSU NOTES
