Oct. 12, 2012
PULLMAN, Wash. - While donning pink jerseys in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Washington State women's soccer team defeated USC 4-0 at Lower Soccer Field, Friday.
Recording their seventh shutout this season, the Cougars (9-4-1, 3-2-1 Pac-12) took the lead over the Trojans (4-7-3, 1-3-2 Pac-12) early and never looked back.
Only 6:55 into the game, sophomore Beau Bremer put the Cougars on the board with a well-placed free kick from 20 yards out. The game-winner marked Bremer's third goal of the season.
The next WSU goal came off a set piece with just under three and a half minutes left in the first half. Senior Brandi Vega took a corner kick which she placed nicely in the box; Rachael Doyle was there to finish the play by heading it into the back of the net. This was the third time this season the junior defender has converted opportunity into points for the Cougars.
Washington State added to its lead in the 82nd minute when Vega converted her sixth goal this season. Vega's goal was set up by a cross in the box from sophomore Jocelyn Jeffers.
In the waning moments of the match, junior Micaela Castain added to her season scoring stats with yet another WSU goal. Castain, who was already the team leading scorer, added her ninth goal of the season with a shot from eight yards out.
"Today was a good all-around performance," stated Cougar head coach Keidane McAlpine. "It's exactly what you look for: we scored early and then we closed it out well. I thought everyone did a really, really good job today."
In front of the net for Washington State was senior Ariana Byrd, who tallied four saves on the day and added another win to her perfect season record. The Cougars recorded 10 corner kicks to USC's four, and took 11 shots while the Trojans took 12.
Next, Washington State travels to California for its final road matches of the season. Thursday, Oct. 18, the Cougars face Stanford at 7:30 p.m., in a match that will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Then, Sunday, Oct. 21, WSU squares off with California at 12:00 p.m.
