Washington State lost to No. 3 UCLA by a 2-1 margin at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles, Friday, Oct. 9. The match was the first of Pac-10 play for both squads.

Despite being out shot 8-0, WSU's solid defense kept the Bruins scoreless going into halftime. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Hultin recorded four saves for the Cougs in the first half.

UCLA got on the board at the 59:52 mark when sophomore Iris Mora bent the ball in off a corner kick to score her fourth goal of the season.

WSU responded in the 75th minute when senior Shelby Brownfield blasted a 20-yard shot over the hands of outstretched UCLA goalkeeper Arianna Criscione for her first goal of the season.

With the score tied 1-1 in overtime, sophomore midfielder Jill Oakes hit a first-time shot past Hultin at the 92:32 mark for the game winner.

Hultin recorded seven saves in the match. Brownfield led the Cougars with three shots in the match.

"UCLA is one of the nation's best," head coach Matt Potter said. "They have outstanding coaching and players. Our performance against an elite team showed how far we have come this season.

"I felt we stuck to the game plan and created chances that on a different day would have left us with a positive result. We will continue to learn and improve our game. We look forward to that next opportunity against USC on Saturday."

Washington State will take on USC to wrap up its opening weekend of Pac-10 play Saturday, Oct. 11 at noon.
