Cougar Soccer Records a Shutout Win at Home
Oct. 7, 2012
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State women's soccer recorded its sixth shutout of the season, defeating Arizona 3-0 at Lower Soccer Field, Sunday. The Cougars (8-4-1, 2-2-1 Pac-12) put on an impressive display of talent in front of a home crowd, downing conference rival Arizona (5-6-3, 1-2-2 Pac-12) in a game that saw six different players make it onto the score sheet and senior defender Zoe Jeffers pick up her first career goal and assist. The scoring action started almost 10 minutes into the game when a header by junior Rachael Doyle put WSU on the board. Doyle's game-winner was set-up by redshirt junior Kayla Johnson and junior Delaney Zalud. Right before the half, junior Micaela Castain got a good look at the goal and took a shot that barely missed, hitting the post. Jeffers put herself in the perfect position to rebound the ball and put it in the back of the net. Jeffers' goal sent Washington State into halftime with a two point margin over the Wildcats. "It was a little emotional for her," commented Cougar head coach Keidane McAlpine of Jeffers' score. "It's been a long time coming, but she's put in the work and she's played well over the last few games. I'm happy she could get one on the board." In the second half, senior Brandi Vega added to WSU's lead by recording her fifth goal of the season. In the 57th minute, Vega was there to cleanup a Jeffers' shot that hit the post to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. McAlpine added, "Anytime you can put three on the board and keep zero from the other team, we've had a good day. We created quite a few chances, so all-in-all not bad." Senior Ariana Byrd represented the Cougars in front of the net, recording a win and tallying five saves on the day. Washington State controlled the run of play for the majority of the game registering 18 shots to Arizona's 11, and taking seven corner kicks to the Wildcats' two. The Cougars return to Lower Soccer Field for the Cougs Wave Pink match in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Friday, Oct. 12 where they will face USC at 1 p.m. The match will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
