Cougar Soccer Wins 4-0 at Texas
Sept. 18, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas - Four different Cougars scored a goal and Washington State University defeated Texas 4-0, in nonconference women's soccer, Friday night. The Cougars (5-2-0) built a 3-0 advantage at halftime and blanked the Longhorns (3-4-0) for their fourth shutout of the season. "We are very pleased with the win, but as a coaching staff we are even more delighted with the way the game plan came together," WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. "I applaud our student-athletes for their effort tonight. We possessed the ball better than we have and that allowed us to create some scoring opportunities. That said, we know this is only one win and that does not make our season. We have a lot of work left to do." In the 18th minute, senior Kiersten Dallstream sent a cross from the right to the near post that Texas goalkeeper Alexa Gaul could not control. Freshman Brandi Vega poked the loose ball across the goalline for her third goal of the season and her second game-winner. Just over 10 minutes later, senior Elysse Van Leer received a pass from senior Maggie Dougher on the right side. Van Leer dribbled to center and blasted a left-footed shot from 22 yards out inside the left post to put WSU on top 2-0. In the 39th minute, Dallstream fed a pass back to Emma Stolz in the box on the left side and the junior fired a shot to the upper right corner to close out the first half scoring. Sophomore Jacquelyn Roth capped the scoring in the 72nd minute when she pounced on a loose ball in the box on the right side following her own corner kick and beat Gaul inside the far post. The Cougars conclude their road trip with a 9 a.m., Pacific match, Sunday at Stephen F. Austin (3-4-0) which defeated Houston 1-0 on the road, Friday. WSU NOTES
