Micaela Castain Records Hat Trick in Soccer Victory

OGDEN, Utah - Freshman Micaela Castain scored three goals to lead Washington State past Weber State 4-1 in nonconference women's soccer, Sunday. After Washington State (2-4-0) went down 1-0 in the first half, Castain's tallied a pair of goals to put the Cougars on top 2-1 at halftime. She added a goal in 70th minute to complete the hat trick. Late in the 29th minute, junior Tiara Pittman had a breakaway down the left side before sending a cross into the box where Castain found the open net from six yards out for her first-collegiate goal. In the 38th minute, Castain converted a turnover into an unassisted goal with a blast from 20 yards out to give the Cougars the lead. The match remained 2-1 until the 67th minute when junior Jacquelyn Roth's corner kick was played by redshirt-senior Mallory Fox from the deep left wing to sophomore Mariah Cameron who fired inside the far post from 22 yards out to put Washington State on top 3-1. Castain closed the scoring with a header off a corner kick from sophomore Shannon McFadden. "After a tough loss, Friday (at BYU), I felt we responded well," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "We possessed the ball well at times and showed character to come back after going down a goal. Overall I am pleased with our performance." Next up for the Cougars is Denver, Friday at 1 p.m. in Spokane at the Gonzaga Tournament. COUGAR NOTES
