PULLMAN, Wash. - Sophomore Micaela Castain scored a pair of goals and Washington State women's soccer defeated Wyoming 3-0 in front of 866 fans at Lower Soccer Field, Friday.

A native of Castro Valley, Calif., Castain led the Cougars (3-1-0) with eight goals last season, but did not have a goal entering the match with the Cowgirls (2-3-0). That changed in the 18th minute.

Sophomore Rachael Doyle sent a free kick toward the near left post that freshman Jocelyn Jeffers headed back to Castain who put a shot from four yards out past Wyoming goalkeeper Courtney Merkle.

Just over five minutes into the second half, junior Brandi Vega beat a Cowgirl defender before making a pass to sophomore Katie Turney on the right side of the field. Turney chipped the ball to the far post and Castain was there for a finish that put Washington State on top 2-0.

"I usually relax after I get one goal," Castain said. "On the second one, I just made my run. I knew someone would yell at me if I didn't get to the far post."

In the 86th minute, freshman Bethanie Skelton notched her first-career goal. Skelton settled a beautiful cross from redshirt-sophomore Kayla Johnson and fired a shot from the right side of the box to close out the scoring.

"The most important thing about today is we got the shutout," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "It was also a good sign that we were able to play a lot of people and the performance of our team did not drop off."

The Cougars outshot the Cowgirls 18-5 and each team earned three corner kicks. Redshirt-freshman Gurveen Clair (68 minutes) and junior Ariana Byrd (22 minutes) combined to register Washington State's third shutout of the season.

The Cougars entertain Weber State, Sunday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m.

COUGAR NOTES
Freshman Lauren Previs came off the bench in her collegiate debut...junior goalkeeper Ariana Byrd played 22 minutes in the second half in her season debut...sophomore Rachael Doyle and redshirt-sophomore Kayla Johnson each tallied their first-career assist...Washington State extended its home shutout streak against unranked nonconference opponents to 568:36.
