POCATELLO, Idaho-- Sophomore Molly Alexander and freshman Megan Hyte each scored their first collegiate goals as WSU downed Idaho State 2-1 in the Cougar women's soccer season opener Friday at Davis Field in Pocatello, Idaho.

"I'm delighted for the team," WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. "They really got off on the right foot today. I was please with their performances all the way down through the team from keepers to forwards. It was a great starting point for the year."

The Cougars were first on the scoreboard at the 8:34 mark as Alexander received an Alix Rustrum pass at the top of the box, beat her defender and buried a left-footed shot high in the Bengal goal. Hyte tallied the second Washington State goal in the 47th minute after she cut inside the Idaho State defense and beat the charging keeper with a shot from 15 yards out.

"It was fantastic to see the team effort," Potter said. "There were lots of unsung performances tonight. We are obviously excited to leave with the win."

Michele Okumura scored Idaho State's lone goal in the 75th minute assisted by Kim Crosbie.

"This is a stepping stone for future performances," said Potter. "There are aspects that went really well and things we need to continue to work on, but considering we had hard time scouting Idaho State and the environment and pressure we played under, I was delighted with how we came through the test."

The Cougars close out their first weekend of play in Moscow, Idaho where they will take on the Vandals Sunday at 3 p.m. at Wicks Field.
