PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State scored three-first half goals and the 21st-ranked Cougars blanked Idaho 3-0 to open their 20th Anniversary Season, Friday at Lower Soccer Field.

Freshman Brandi Vega scored the first goal of the match when she received a cross from redshirt-junior Mallory Fox and beat Idaho (0-1-0) goalkeeper Liz Boyden from four yards on out on the left side at the 17:15 mark.

Senior Kiersten Dallstream made the score 2-0 at 30:00 when she beat Vandal defender in the box and scored from eight yards out on the right side.

Just 2:27 later, sophomore Tiara Pittman took a pass on the left side from senior Elysse Van Leer and blasted a shot just inside the far post to put WSU (1-0-0) on top 3-0.

The Cougars dominated the match with 21 shots to Idaho's four, including a 10-0 advantage in the second half, and 11 corner kicks to zero for the Vandals.

"It was a fantastic preseason, but there is nothing like playing on a gameday," WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. "There was energy and excitement. The crowd was here. It was a different feeling. It was nice to have a clean sheet to start the season."

GAME NOTES
Brandi Vega became the first true freshman to score WSU's first goal of the season since Ashley Honda in 1999... tally came at 17:15, the earliest into a season since Molly Alexander at 8:34 in 2005... Vega, along with fellow-freshmen Mariah Cameron, Melanie Johnston and Shannon McFadden started in their collegiate debuts...junior transfer Meghan Berlingo started and made one save in net during 76:31 in her Cougar debut...redshirt-freshman Megan Murphy and freshman goalkeeper Ariana Byrd also made their collegiate debuts...senior Kiersten Dallstream raised her career-goal total to 18 and her collegiate point total to 45, both tied for fifth in WSU history...Cougars recorded their fourth-straight shutout at home dating back to last season and have not given up a goal at Lower Soccer Field in the last 436:45...attendance of 1,007 was the third-largest home crowd in WSU history.
