Arizona Defeats Women's Soccer 1-0 with Corner Kick Goal

October 19, 1997

PULLMAN, Wash. - Co-captain Melissa Kessler scored off a corner kick with four minutes left in regulation to give Arizona a 1-0 women's soccer victory over Washington State in the Cougars' final home match of 1997.

The Wildcats (7-6-1 overall, 1-2-0 Pac-10) earned their first win against a Pac-10 opponent since 1995 (3-2 USC). The Cougars (7-6-0, 2-2-0), who managed just four shots in the second half, lost their second straight match.

Sophomore Krista Bogdan (Tucson, Ariz.) took the corner kick for Arizona and sent the ball to the near post. Kessler (Elk Grove, Calif.) controlled the loose ball and fired a shoulder-high shot from eight yards past WSU freshman goalkeeper Shannon Wilson (Las Vegas, Nevada) for her second goal of the season. Two minutes later, Arizona forward Nikki Jones (Canby, Ore.) sent a shot off the crossbar that rolled over the top of the goal.

Wilson finished the day with a season-best eight saves. Arizona goalkeeper Inger Airheart (Roseville, Calif.) collected four saves en route to her fifth shutout of the year.

The Cougars threatened several times midway through the first half during corner kicks. Sophomore Meagin Donovan (Noblesville, Ind.) settled one corner, but knocked her eight-yard shot wide right. Another corner she headed into the waiting hands of Airheart.

WSU is on the road the remaining three weeks of the season. Next week the Cougars battle Stanford Oct. 24 and California Oct. 26.
