Captains' Diary: Week Ten

Oct. 27th, 2004

So our weekend in Oregon was somewhat disappointing considering we walked away without a win when we felt like we could have had a better showing overall. We started the Oregon game on a role and scored a great goal right off the bat. We had momentum at the beginning of the game despite the wet, rainy conditions. I think we all assumed we would keep that going and come up with another goal sooner or later. Then Oregon capitalized on one of our mistakes right before the end of the first half which put the game tied 1-1. That was a wake up call for us going into the second half.

Oregon came out of halftime motivated and we found ourselves reacting instead of dictating play and that turned us on our heals. We definitely found our chances and created our own opportunities but the final piece of execution was not in tact. We would have a great build up down the field but then the end product was not a goal. The game went into double overtime and we ended in a 1-1 tie. Even though on the road a tie is usually seen as a positive result, we felt like we let ourselves down and that a tie in this game was unacceptable and we were disappointed in ourselves. We now had another challenge waiting for us on Sunday…the OSU Beavers.

WSU vs. OSU is always a battle; more like a war. You can always count being a physical, hard fought game from the first minute to the 90th. We were sharp from the beginning and were initiating play in the first half. They had one golden opportunity that they were able to finish to go up 1-0.

We didn't panic because they way we were playing made us confident we'd be able to get a goal and come back. As the game went on and the individual battles all over the field continued, we found ourselves in a race against the clock to find a way to keep the game alive. We created good chances but were unable to finish them. The game ended in a 1-0 loss for us. We left the state of Oregon disappointed in ourselves. Our performance was better on Sunday and we played hard, but that little something extra was just missing from our game. We left with the attitude to be ready to go back to work this week and get ready for our next big weekend…UW.
