PULLMAN, Wash.- Washington State freshman Kristen Rue fired rounds of 77 (+6) and 70 (-2) to pace Washington State through the first two rounds at the Cougar Cup.

The University of Washington leads the 13-team field despite the first round being played through 20 m.p.h. winds, posting a 594 (+18) afer 36 holes, including a Cougar Cup record 285 (-3) in the second round. Cyd Okino leads the field with 144 (E) after posting an opening round 76 (+4) and tournament record second round 68 (-4).

Rue carded a 77 (+6) in the morning and a 70 (-2) in the afternoon to sit in third place overall after posting seven birdies and picking up one of only three eagles recorded by the field on the day. Her second round score enters the Cougar Cup record book tied for second in the overall low round score.

"It is exciting to have Kristen post two solid rounds and shoot her first under-par collegiate round," Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said.

The 2010 defending tournament champion Cougars currently sit in a tie for fifth with a 618 (+42). Junior Emma Betland shot a opening round 76 (+4) and later added a 78 (+7) to enter tomorrow's final round tied for 17th. Sophomore Mallory Kent carded a first round 78 (+7) and a second round 80 (+9) after posting six birdies in the two rounds, tied for second most in the field.

"I was very pleased with how we competed through the elements," added Kamimura. "We played the back nine well and put ourselves in a position to make a move tomorrow."

Also competing for the Cougars as an individual, Junior Ellen Park fired a 75 (+3) in the second round.

Tournament play wraps up Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
