WORLEY, Idaho - The Washington State University women's golf team saved its best score for the final round, posting a 301 (+13) at the season-opening Circling Raven Collegiate Invitational at the Circling Raven Golf Club, Tuesday.
The Cougar women entered the final day in a tie for 10th place, but moved up three spots with the effort. WSU carded a three-round total of 920 (+56), finishing just one stroke back of the top five in the 20-team field. WSU's final-round score was tied for second-lowest in the field on the final day.
"I felt like everyone's games were much improved in the final round," WSU Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said. "We finished strong, and that was what I was excited about. They're showing a lot of maturity, which is exciting."
Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore Ellen Park, who was one of three Cougars to finish in the top 25. Park, who earned medalist honors for the Cougars for the first time in her career, finished in a tie for 14th with a 227 (+11). It was also the first top-25 finish of her career, and her final-round 74 (+2) was a career low and moved her up 12 places on the final day.
Fellow sophomore Emma Betland was just one stroke back of Park, and finished in a tie for 18th. Also posting a top-25 finish in the season's debut event was Ali Thompson. Playing as an individual, the sophomore posted a three-round total of 229 (+13). The tournament marked the fifth-career top-25 effort for each.
