STANFORD, Calif. - The Washington State women's golf team fell just shy in its quest for a repeat trip to the NCAA Championships as the Cougars lost in a three-way playoff for eighth place of the NCAA West Regional at the par 72, 6,159 yard Stanford Golf Course, Saturday.

The top eight teams and two individuals from the regional advance to the national championships at Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala., May 18-21. With a 54-hole total of 913, WSU ended regulation play in a tie for eighth with Oregon and Texas prompting the playoff to decide the final berth to the NCAAs, which Texas claimed on the first playoff hole.

"We played really well this week and we were excited to be in a playoff," WSU Head Coach Walt Williams said. "It was fun. We gave it a good shot and came up just a little bit short."

WSU entered the regional seeded 18th in the 21-team field, but the Cougars, who were No. 65 in the latest Golfstat rankings, tied or bettered 10 teams ahead of them in the standings.

The Cougars, who entered the final round in sole possession of eighth, shot a final round of 307 as every member of the five-person team broke 80. Anastasia Kostina led the way as the sophomore from Nakhabino, Russia finished in a tie for 12th at 5-over 221.

Kostina shot a final round of 3-over 75, which included a scintillating 2-under 34 on the back nine. Kostina recorded four birdies coming in.

All-American Kim Welch finished in a tie for 18th at 6-over 222. The junior from Sacramento, Calif., finished in the top 19 in all 11 tournaments she played in during the 2003-04 season. Dating back to the 2002-03 campaign, Welch has finished in the top 19 in 15 consecutive tournaments. Included in that stretch are 11 top 10 efforts and five wins.

Stephanie Parsley shot a final round 79 to complete the regional in a tie for 64th. Jay-Lee Longbottom and Maria Kostina each turned in final rounds of 78 to tie for 78th in the 108-person field.
