LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Washington State University women's golf team is tied for ninth place after Friday's second round at the 2005 NCAA Division I West Regional.

The No. 25 Cougars (Golfstat) shot 305 (+17) at the par 72, 6,319-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course. WSU is tied with No. 23 Stanford at 31-over, 12 shots back of tournament leader No. 14 USC.

The tournament concludes Saturday with the top eight schools advancing to the NCAA Championships at Sunriver, Ore., May 17-20.

No. 12 Tennessee is second to USC at 25-over followed by No. 2 Georgia (+26) and No. 3 UCLA, No. 24 California, and BYU, all at 27-over. No. 8 Oklahoma State and Oregon are tied for seventh at plus 29, two shots ahead of the Cougars and Cardinal.

WSU senior Maria Kostina carded her second straight 3-over 75 and is tied for 16th at 6-over par heading into the final round. The top two individuals from schools that do not advance as a team also qualify for the NCAA Championships. Of the 15 players ahead of Kostina, 12 are on teams currently in the top eight, including tournament leader Sophia Sheridan of California at 2-under.

Other Cougars in contention as individuals should WSU not advance as a team include junior Anastasia Kostina (+7), and seniors Kim Welch and Jay-Lee Longbottom, both at 9-over.
