May 5, 2005

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Washington State University women's golf team is in eighth place after the first round of play at the 2005 Division I NCAA West Regional, Thursday.

The Cougars shot 302 (+14) at the par 72, 6,319-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course, and are 11 strokes back of first place school, Tennessee.

After the first of three rounds, the Cougars (No. 25/Golfstat) find themselves ahead of No. 17 Arizona by one stroke, and No. 3 UCLA and No. 8 Oklahoma State by two strokes. Washington State leads No. 23 Stanford by four strokes.

The Cougars are looking to make it back to the NCAA Championships after making their first ever trip in 2003. Washington State just missed a repeat berth last season, losing a sudden-death playoff to the University of Texas.

The top eight schools from the regional championships will move onto the NCAA Championships. The tournament will be held Tuesday, May 17 through Friday, May 20 at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.

The senior trio of Jay-Lee Longbottom, Maria Kostina and two-time All-American Kim Welch each shot 75 (+3) in the opening round, and are one stroke back of the top 25.

Junior Anastasia Kostina, who was named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference first team, shot 77 (+5), and freshman Tracy Broders shot 82 (+10) to round out the scoring for the Cougars.

Second-round results will be posted at www.wsucougars.com, and live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
